You might think the colder weather means it’s time to pack it in and not worry so much about your trees. But they need year-round care, and this is the perfect time to prune your trees and shrubs to get them ready for spring.

Why prune? Well, for starters, removing branches that rub together, are dead, damaged, infected, or infested is one of the best things you can do to maintain the health of your tree. And for fruit trees, it’s a great opportunity to re-establish their structure for production in the spring.

Winter pruning

In terms of looks, pruning can help maintain the desired shape and size of your trees. It can also raise the canopy above the roof of your house, to help prevent squirrels and other pests from getting inside.

But why are the colder months one of the best times to prune? There are lots of reasons:

  • Diseases and insects are less likely to invade any cuts in your trees from pruning.
  • When the leaves have fallen from your trees, it’s much easier to see their overall structure and spot any dead branches.
  • You don’t have to worry about pruning stimulating new growth that may not harden before the colder weather sets in.
  • It’s a great excuse to get outside and enjoy the brisk temperature!

Before you get started, it’s important to keep a few things in mind:

  • Make sure you have the right tools for the jobs to get the results you want and to keep yourself safe.
  • Know the natural shape of your plant before you begin pruning.
  • Assess the tree before you begin cutting and decide which branches will stay and which will go.
  • Stop occasionally to take a look at your work. You don’t want to get carried away!
